Ancient Greece was a series of athletic competitions held for government of various city states of Ancient Greece held in the honor of Zeus. Ancient Greece first Games began as an annual foot race of young women in competition for the position of the priestess for the goddess and a second race was established for a consort for the priestess who would participate in the religious traditions at the temple. In Ancient Olympics was less events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete. The winner of an Olympic Ancient event was awarded an olive branch and often was received with much respect throughout Greece, especially in his home town, where he was often granted large sums of money and prizes including vats of olive oil. Sculptors would create statues of Olympic victors, and poets would sing odes in their praise for money.

Olympics development during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. These adjustments create some of winter sports, the Paralympics Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes. World Wars led to the postponement of the 1916, 1940, and 1944 Games. Large boycotts during the Cold War limited participation in the 1980 and 1984 Games. Olympics have grown in scale to the point that nearly every nation is represented. Such growth has created numerous challenges, including boycotts, doping, bribery of officials, and terrorism. Olympics also constitute a major opportunity for the host city and country to showcase itself to the world.
